WORDS AND MUSIC

This is in essence a spoken word performance with musical prompts in which I talk about sounds, images and ideas from 1970-1973, how they affect me at the formative ages of 13, 14, 15 &16 and the impact this has on me right up to the present.

Each vignette begins with an ‘off the cuff’ verbal ‘snapshot’ of a point in time in my life including a hit song from that time, my environment and me.

This is followed by a rendition of that song by me with a band I have assembled just for this occasion. After this I give a brief exposition linking this piece to a more contemporary song of my own, followed by a performance of that song.

It came about because I was asked to perform a set of the songs that influenced me by Mark Burchett (an old colleague and friend of mine) at a club he ran – The Flying Saucer Club in Elsternwick, Victoria. I jumped at this as an opportunity to talk about a particularly formative time and what happened to me in that time and since. The talking was all impromptu and completely unscripted as I knew I would have plenty I wanted to say.

The renditions of the songs were also one off (unless I do more shows of this nature) and are imperfect in their nature due to limited time to rehearse. This however is not a disclaimer as I like the idea that any performance is really just what the performer can salvage from any given situation.

Kim Salmon is an Australian musician and songwriter.

Kim Salmon's most enduring legacy, and not one that he particularly tried for, will no doubt be that many blame him, or at least his band The Scientists, for 'grunge'.
